The Ultimate Kitchen Compost Bin.
Happy first Monday of MARCH my lovelies! Every year, when we hit March, we just know that spring is coming soon, followed by summer. I swear last night I saw a team of geese flying back North - us Canadians know what that means... We’re anticipating an early spring, and I’m here for it. Give us sunshine, give us warmth, and bring on the heat!
Last week I shared one of my favourite kitchen dupes that’s helped to keep my space clean, all while being eco-friendly and saving me money, therefore saving YOU money. This week, we’re doing a mini-blog and sticking to the kitchen theme, all while still being kind to the environment… this one’s for all my fellow composters.
For those of you following my blog (thank you, loyal readers), you know that lately I’ve been trying to change a lot of accents in my home to be matte black. I have a running joke that I’m going to change one item per day in my home to matte black until my husband notices something’s different… Let’s see how long we can go. With that being said, I started with my kitchen countertops and recently switched out my old beige and white compost bin to this super cute, matte black, multifunctional Compost Bin, and I’ve had no regrets since! Here’s why I love my new compost bin:
The Functionality - A feature I absolutely love is that this bin comes with multiple hanging options, allowing adjustment to fit your needs. It comes with a large hook that goes over your cabinets, making it easy to slide food scraps into it while you’re doing some chopping. It additionally comes with a clear sticker hooking system that allows you to put it up on your backsplash if you want it elevated off the countertop, OR you can even stick it to the inside of a cabinet and keep your bin out of sight. Options for everyone!
The Lid - The lid is fully removable, making it easier to wash and to handle on my countertop when I’m throwing food scraps in there. The lid is also light and easy to lift, but surprisingly keeps the smell inside the bin, where you want it. I haven’t experienced any issues with this yet, and since we’re only two people at home, sometimes it takes a while before I empty that compost out. The lid also has a little hook on the inside, allowing you to hang it on the compost bin itself so that you don’t have to leave it on the countertop. It rests perfectly on the edge of the bin itself, like so:
Another awesome feature is the snap-close garbage bag buckle. Just under the cover of the bin, you have an extra piece that snaps onto the bin and holds the compostable garbage bag in place. One of the most annoying parts of the old bin was dumping food scraps into it and the garbage bag falling right into it when the scraps were too heavy. At that point the bag was dirty, smelly, and had to be replaced since it collapsed into itself. This is a non issue with the pressure ring design that keeps the garbage bag fixed in place.
The Size - Although it looks small and compact, the inside of the bin actually fits so much! Of course, it depends how much composting you actually do, but the large rectangular shape fits way more than my old bin did.
The Look - the matte black look is super sleek, and going to match perfectly with the changes I’m making to my kitchen. But for those of you who prefer a pop of colour, this Compost Bin also comes in a baby blue and dusty green. For a simpler look, grab the white one - perfect for white, black, grey, or two-tone kitchens! It also isn’t so big that it’s an eyesore - it’s pretty compact in size which is a bonus for me.
I officially declare this little compost bin Tried & True For You. If you’re not composting yet, what’re you waiting for? It’s an easy way to cut down on the amount of trash that ends up in a landfill and reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, with zero to little effort or money required. I grew up in a home where there was no such thing as recycling or composting (I know, I know, it’s terrible), and I adopted it fully in my home when I moved out. Anyway, your garbage will no longer be smelly, and you’ll thank me later! Any baby steps we can take toward being a little more environmentally friendly is worth the little effort it takes. Let’s be kind to our planet so that we, and our future generations, can enjoy it for a long time. Until next time…
Love, Annamaria
