Get Organized With Me: 3 Holiday Storage Must-Haves

Happy 2nd Monday of 2024!

Welcome back to another fresh start to the week with Tried and True For You. Now that the holidays are officially over, it’s time to clear out the decorations. I don’t know about you; I love the holidays along with its accompanying magic, but when it’s over… It’s over. I always look forward to getting the decorations down, tucking them away into a well-organized storage, and enjoying my freshly decluttered space. I’m not sure why, but it makes my home feel clean and new again. Anyone else?

My inner child is still a big fan of all holidays, including the decor that comes along with them. You’ll catch me here, pushing 30 years old, in a home with no children (yet), putting up indoor AND outdoor decorations. I remember when I first moved in 5 years ago, being new to the neighbourhood, my neighbour asked whether I was decorating for my kids, to which I answered “nope, just decorating for myself.” Then the imposter syndrome hit when I realized I’m truly a child at heart, and living the life of an adult. I don't think I'll ever grow out of it.

But the reality of the situation is that I am an adult, and it’s time to get the Christmas decorations down. Anyone who knows me, knows I’m a stickler for putting things away in an organized fashion. Let’s face it, it’s way more fun to store decorations when you know they’ll be sitting pretty for you in a year’s time.

Let’s start with my Christmas tree. It’s a standard height at approximately 8 feet tall, that separates into 3 pieces. But it’s a REALLY full tree. That means even when it’s taken apart and folded up, it’s still extremely large. I was so worried about storing it away for 12 months because I really didn’t want any dust or bugs to get in it. Surprisingly, this big, pine-y mess managed to fit in the most perfect and spacious Christmas Tree Storage bag. I’ve had it for almost 4 years now and here’s what’s impressed me most about this bag:

  • Space: Even though my tree is dense and large, we still have extra room in the bag for additional decor around our home that needs to be stored away. I have a fluffy pine garland on my entrance railing and I also manage to fit that into the bag with more room in it still for the 600-count string of lights I put on my tree. A happy accident!

  • Sturdy Handles: Lord knows with a tree this full, it weighs a ton. Add in some other decor we’ve shoved in there, and it weighs even more. In the 4 years of bringing it up and down two sets of stairs, and storing it up on a shelf, the handles are still on and going strong.

  • Strength of Material: Once the tree is taken apart, there are lots of pointy ends at the top and bottom of each piece that threaten to tear through even the toughest of materials. I store the footing of the tree inside the bag, too. Even though the bag is flexible, making it easy to take things in and out of it, let’s just say the material has withstood the test of time, with no tears thus far.

Watch how spacious this Christmas Tree Bag is in 10 seconds or less:

Next up, the ornaments and other decor around the house has got to go. These are easy. I bought matching stackable 72L storage bins where all of "the things" can go. These black, stackable and sleek storage bins from Rona fit all my decorations seamlessly. I love these bins because they provide ample storage, are sturdy enough to stack one on top of the other with the indented lid ensuring a “no-sliding” function, and since they’re all black and match the aesthetic of my storage room, they also look fabulous. I never thought a storage room could be so aesthetically pleasing, but here we are.

*Life Hack: Buy a chalk marker from Michael’s so that you can label each bin to know what’s inside of it. Thank me later.

Lastly, what is Christmas if not the joy of wrapping presents? Before I had this, I’m a little ashamed to say that all of my wrapping paper was standing upright in the biggest Christmas gift bag I’ve owned, along with tissue paper, labels, ribbons, bows, and other Christmas bags and boxes. This has to be my very favourite purchase of all for Christmas storage. The ultimate Gift Wrap Organizer and Storage. If you don’t have one of these yet, you need it in your life! I was actually shocked at how much I was able to fit inside this storage. It looks small and compact, but it stows away all of your mess in the most organized fashion. In the photos, you can see how I was able to fit everything neatly into the storage. I put gift bags of all sizes, wrapping paper, bows, tissue paper, small boxes, gift tags, ribbons, Christmas cards, tape and a pen. All in this little rectangular bag. I then put it up on the shelf, right on top of my tree bag in my storage room. I love that it’s got handles on the long and the short side, that way no matter how you store it, you can easily pull it out of its spot. Win-Win.

And just like that, the house is spotless, the decorations are organized and put away, and I let out a huge sigh of relief as I plop down on my couch. If you’re just getting started on organization and storage, I’ve got tons of tips and tricks coming for you in my upcoming blog posts. For a lot of people, getting organized and managing storage can be a difficult and daunting task. It can easily overwhelm you when there is a lot to get in order. But organizing is something I love to do, and I can’t wait to share everything I know with you to help you get started on your organization projects!
